The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has issued a warning about the rise of illegal online pharmacies that are selling counterfeit pills contaminated with fentanyl and methamphetamine to consumers who believe they are purchasing legitimate prescription medications.

“As more Americans turn to online pharmacies for essential medications, the DEA is releasing this Public Safety Alert to highlight the increase in illegal websites, often based overseas, that are deceitfully targeting American consumers,” the agency stated in a recent announcement.

Many customers mistakenly believe they are buying medications such as Oxycodone, Adderall, and Xanax, as these websites often present a convincing facade, complete with 24-hour customer service, a U.S. web address, and a professional appearance.

Websites operating out of India and the Dominican Republic that falsely represent themselves as legitimate U.S. pharmacies are “collaborating with drug traffickers to fulfill online orders with counterfeit pills,” according to the DEA.

In 2023 alone, the DEA confiscated over 80 million fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills and approximately 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder, amounting to more than 390 million potentially lethal doses of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin. Methamphetamine is known to be a highly addictive stimulant.

On September 30, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced the indictment of 18 individuals implicated in a scheme to manufacture and distribute millions of dangerous counterfeit pharmaceuticals through fraudulent online pharmacies located in India, the Dominican Republic, and the U.S. At least nine customers died from narcotics poisoning between August 2023 and June 2024.

The issue of targeting consumers with counterfeit pills is not a new phenomenon. Three years ago, the DEA alerted the public about the increasing prevalence and deadly consequences of fake prescription pills containing fentanyl and meth.

Legitimate pharmacies always require a doctor’s prescription, possess a physical address and phone number in the U.S., are licensed in the states where they operate, and employ a state-licensed pharmacist to address patient inquiries, as outlined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Consumers can access resources and tools related to this issue on the FDA’s BeSafeRx campaign website.
