ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Pharmacies play a crucial role in providing healthcare services to many communities, particularly in low-income areas where local stores are essential for access to medications and other necessities.

Unfortunately, residents of the Bull’s Head neighborhood in Rochester, classified as a food desert, are preparing for the closure of their local Walgreens on November 12. This could significantly impact access to vital services for the community.

Key Points to Know:

• The Walgreens in Bull’s Head, Rochester, is set to close on November 12, which will deprive local residents of essential pharmacy services.
• Concerns have been raised by community members and local leaders.
• Rochester Regional Health is making plans to serve impacted customers at its St. Mary’s campus pharmacy.

Area residents are already expressing their worries. Long-time resident Kristal Padgett pointed out the lack of nearby alternatives.

“I don’t think there’s a pharmacy within walking distance from here,” she said.

Janice Patton, another local, shared her concerns as well.

“Where am I supposed to get my medicine now?” she asked.

Josie McClary, president of the 19th Ward Community Association, highlighted the broader significance of the store, noting that it serves not only as a pharmacy but also as a key convenience store for the neighborhood.

“This Walgreens isn’t just a place to pick up prescriptions; it’s also a convenience store for the community,” McClary emphasized.

Nearest Walgreens Closure Poses Challenges for Rochester Residents

The closest Walgreens to the soon-to-close West Main Street location is roughly two miles away, which may present difficulties for residents without access to transportation. This marks the second pharmacy closure in the area within two years, further intensifying the struggles for the local community.

“This is truly devastating for our neighborhood,” McClary remarked.

Walgreens addressed the closure in a statement, pointing to financial factors:

“We are making significant adjustments to our store footprint, closing locations based on profitability. Unfortunately, this Rochester store is unable to sustain the costs related to rent, staffing, and supplies.”

Residents like Patton and Padgett are frustrated by the decision.

“This location is so convenient for everyone in this community. Taking it away is just wrong,” Patton expressed.

Padgett, who has lived near the store for seven years, explained how the closure will disrupt her family.

“I’m constantly in and out of the store. I get my medication here after every doctor’s visit, and my child’s prescriptions too. This will be a huge inconvenience for us,” Padgett said.

There is, however, a small silver lining. Rochester Regional Health has announced plans to assist Walgreens customers by offering services at their St. Mary’s campus pharmacy.

“What a blessing. St. Mary’s is a true anchor in this Bull’s Head neighborhood, stepping up to help,” McClary praised.

Despite these supportive measures, Mayor Malik Evans has called on Walgreens to reconsider its decision and remain in the area, citing ongoing efforts to revitalize Bull’s Head. Walgreens, however, declined, confirming the store’s closure will proceed as planned on November 12.
