A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that pharmacy closures in Colorado communities have a significant impact on patient access to anticonvulsant medications, which are commonly prescribed for epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and psychiatric disorders. Interruptions in these medications can lead to heightened risks, including increased mortality, pain, and emergency room visits.

The research, led by Dr. Kelly Anderson, assistant professor at the University of Colorado’s Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, examined the effects of pharmacy closures on the accessibility of a protected class of medications under Medicare, which are essential for patient coverage under Medicare prescription drug plans.

Findings show that access to these critical medications was disrupted due to pharmacy closures. Using Colorado all-payer claims data, the researchers identified 39 community pharmacy closures occurring from January 2018 to June 2022. Patients affected by these closures experienced a 15.6% decrease in prescription fills and a 14.4% decrease in days supplied.

“Our research found that refill disruptions for anticonvulsant medications can last up to six months following a pharmacy closure,” Anderson noted. “Although mail-order pharmacies provide an option for some patients, they did not adequately bridge the gap left by local pharmacy closures.”

This study adds to prior research on the impact of pharmacy closures on cardiovascular medications, which also showed a decline in access following closures. Anderson suggests future studies may explore other medication classes, as trends in access disruptions become more evident.

“These findings indicate a need for the U.S. healthcare system to support patients affected by pharmacy closures. This might include strategies like offering 90-day medication supplies ahead of closures, financial assistance to pharmacies in underserved areas, or encouraging clinicians to help patients with prescription transfers,” Anderson suggested.
